Milan has been investing in public transport and cycle paths since the start of the
century, therefore it comes as no surprise that more and more people are leaving their cars
at home. From an architectural point of view, many of the sustainable projects (in the
broadest sense of the word) are in fact restoration projects giving new life to old industrial
buildings, making them more efficient and turning them into multi-purpose spaces.
This city-state has identified two key challenges which serve as the basis for its
sustainability strategy: climate change and demographic change. Singapore has invested in
structural adaptation works to protect buildings and prevent coastal erosion with purpose-
built barriers. It has designed drainage systems to reduce the flood risk, which conduct the
water into underground channels. Singapore has also restored mangrove forests which
provide effective, natural protection against tropical storms.
Malmö is one of the most sustainable cities in Europe. It manages rainwater
through a system of canals and reservoirs, and its sewerage system is capable of handling
sudden water loads. It has also fully redeveloped the Bo01 district, a former industrial
complex which is today powered entirely using renewable resources. Each and every
building is equipped with devices for reducing water consumption and recovering waste grey
water and rainwater.
Vancouver has adopted its own strategy for adapting to climate change.
Among the initiatives it has undertaken are those to reduce emissions and increase the
number of green buildings. The city has drastically reduced the number of cars, making bold
investments in sustainable mobility, and has focused especially on social cohesion and inclusivity.
